Tarot Card Readings Australia:

How Does Tarot Work and What Can the Cards Really Reveal?

Tarot cards, candles, crystals, and an open book on a dark starry cloth

By Sarah Kulkens™ | Daughter of Kerry Kulkens™ | Seven Generations of Spiritual Wisdom | Kerry Kulkens Magic Shop™, Belgrave, Melbourne, Australia

Have you ever looked at a deck of Tarot cards and wondered how something so simple could offer such meaningful insight into your life?

Perhaps you've seen someone having a Tarot reading and been fascinated by how the cards seem to tell a story. Or maybe you're going through a difficult time and wondering whether a relationship will improve, whether a new opportunity is worth pursuing, or whether life is finally about to change for the better.

One question I am frequently asked is, "Sarah, how does Tarot actually work, and can the cards really tell me what is going to happen?"

It's a wonderful question, and one I believe deserves an explanation without frightening predictions, complicated mystical language, or promises we simply can't make.

I'm Sarah Kulkens, daughter of the late Kerry Kulkens™, and Tarot has been part of my family's spiritual traditions for generations.

Growing up surrounded by psychic readings, Tarot cards, palmistry and spiritual teachings, I learnt that the real value of divination isn't simply knowing what might happen tomorrow.

It's understanding what is happening in your life today and recognising the choices that could influence your tomorrow.

So, whether you're completely new to Tarot or have enjoyed readings for years, I'd like to share what the cards mean to me, how they are interpreted, and what you should know before booking a professional Tarot card reading in Australia.

What Is a Tarot Card Reading?

A Tarot card reading is a traditional form of divination that uses a specially illustrated deck of cards to explore personal circumstances, relationships, opportunities, challenges and possible future directions.

Most traditional Tarot decks contain 78 cards, divided into two groups:

  • 22 Major Arcana cards that represent significant life themes, turning points, and personal development.
  • 56 Minor Arcana cards, reflecting everyday experiences, emotions, relationships, decisions and practical challenges.

Each card contains imagery and symbolism that can be interpreted in relation to a person's question or circumstances.

Tarot began as a European card game centuries ago and gradually developed into the spiritual and divinatory practice recognised today.

Some people approach Tarot as a spiritual connection with intuition and universal energies. Others appreciate its symbolism as a way to examine their feelings, identify patterns, and consider different perspectives.

Personally, I believe Tarot is most valuable when it helps people understand themselves, see possibilities and approach their future with greater confidence.

How Does Tarot Work? Understanding the Mystery Behind the Cards

Let me explain how I approach Tarot.

Imagine arriving for a reading feeling uncertain about your future.

Perhaps your relationship has reached a crossroads. Maybe your work has become unfulfilling, or you feel something in your life needs to change, but you cannot quite identify what.

During a Tarot reading, cards are shuffled, selected and placed into a pattern known as a spread.

Different positions in that spread may represent your present circumstances, past influences, potential obstacles, opportunities, or possible future developments.

The reader then interprets the relationship between the cards, their traditional meanings and the question being explored.

For example, imagine receiving three cards:

The Fool: Often associated with new beginnings, adventure and stepping into unfamiliar territory.

The Wheel of Fortune: Traditionally connected with changing circumstances, cycles and unexpected developments.

The Star: A beautiful symbol of hope, renewal, inspiration and renewed confidence.

Together, these cards might encourage someone to recognise that an uncertain situation could also offer a fresh start.

However, they do not prove that a particular event will occur.

For me, Tarot's skill lies in understanding the overall story being presented rather than making dramatic predictions based on one card.

Tarot is a language of symbols, possibilities and interpretation, not a scientifically established method of predicting future events.

And that distinction is important.

Can Tarot Cards Really Predict the Future?

This is probably one of the biggest questions people ask when searching for Tarot card readings in Australia.

Can the cards actually tell you what will happen?

Within traditional spiritual practices, Tarot has long been used to explore possible future outcomes. Many readers, myself included, approach the cards through intuition and spiritual interpretation.

But I also believe strongly in free will.

Life is not simply a story written in stone.

Your decisions, actions, relationships and changing circumstances all influence the direction your life takes.

Think about it this way.

Suppose your reading suggests an exciting career opportunity is approaching.

Does that mean you should sit at home and wait for someone to knock on your door?

Of course not.

It may be an invitation to update your résumé, pursue a qualification, reconnect with professional contacts or investigate opportunities you previously overlooked.

The reading becomes useful because it encourages awareness and constructive action.

That is what I love about Tarot.

Rather than leaving someone feeling powerless about their future, a thoughtful reading can inspire them to help shape it.

What Do the Major Arcana Tarot Cards Mean?

Some of the most recognisable Tarot cards belong to the Major Arcana.

These cards represent universal experiences that people have encountered throughout human history.

They represent love, loss, courage, uncertainty, transformation, temptation, hope, and achievement.

Let me introduce a few that often draw attention.

Hooded skeletal figure in a doorway, holding up a hand over a ruined city at sunset, labeled “DEATH.”

The Death Card: Is It Really a Bad Omen?

Whenever I mention the Death card, people sometimes look a little concerned.

But there is no need to panic.

Despite its dramatic name and imagery, the Death card is traditionally associated with endings, transitions and transformation.

It can symbolise leaving an old chapter behind to make room for something new.

Perhaps an unhealthy habit is ending, a difficult relationship is changing, or an outdated belief no longer serves you.

The Death card is not a reliable prediction of physical death.

I would never encourage someone to fear for their life because of a Tarot card.

The Lovers tarot card showing two opposing figures, one dark-haired and one red-haired, split by a vertical divide.

The Lovers: Is Romance on the Way?

The Lovers is another fascinating card.

Naturally, people often associate it with romance, attraction and relationships.

But its meaning can be much broader.

The Lovers may also represent personal values, emotional compatibility and important decisions.

Sometimes the question isn't whether someone loves you.

It is whether the relationship genuinely reflects the love, respect, and happiness you deserve.

The Tower: When Life Suddenly Changes

Now, here's a card with a reputation!

The Tower is traditionally connected with disruption, sudden revelations and the collapse of something that may no longer have a stable foundation.

It can be confronting.

Yet a Tower experience doesn't necessarily mean disaster.

Sometimes an unexpected change reveals a truth we have avoided, allowing us to rebuild our lives in a healthier, more authentic way.

As I often remind people, change can feel uncomfortable without ending your story.

What Can You Ask During a Tarot Reading?

One of the lovely things about Tarot is that you don't need to arrive with a perfectly prepared list of questions.

You can simply come as you are.

However, questions that encourage reflection and understanding often offer more useful guidance than those that demand a definite yes or no.

Here are some examples.

Love and relationships

  • What could help me create a healthier, more fulfilling relationship?
  • What emotional patterns should I watch out for?
  • How can I move forward after a difficult separation?

Career and opportunities

  • What should I consider before changing careers?
  • How can I recognise opportunities that suit my abilities?
  • What might be holding me back from pursuing my ambitions?

Personal growth

  • Why do I keep finding myself in similar situations?
  • What strengths could help me move through this challenging period?
  • What areas of my life deserve more attention?

Life direction

  • What should I reflect on before making an important decision?
  • How can I reconnect with my confidence?
  • What possibilities might I have overlooked?

A meaningful reading should leave you with something useful to think about.

It should never make you feel that someone else has complete control over your destiny.

Do You Need to Believe in Psychic Abilities for Tarot to Work?

Absolutely not.

Over the years, I've encountered people with many different attitudes towards psychic readings and spiritual practices.

Some arrive with strong spiritual beliefs. Others are simply curious. And some are openly sceptical.

That's perfectly fine.

You don't have to accept every spiritual interpretation to find value in reflecting on the cards.

Sometimes the symbolism encourages a person to acknowledge something they already know but have been reluctant to confront.

For example, a card representing balance might prompt someone to recognise they spend too much time caring for everyone else while neglecting their own wellbeing.

A card symbolising new beginnings may inspire someone to consider a fresh direction.

That reflective experience can be meaningful regardless of whether you believe the cards have a supernatural influence.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, respected and free to form your own opinions.

Are Online Tarot Readings as Good as Face-to-Face Readings?

This is another common question, particularly for people living outside Melbourne.

Both face-to-face and remote readings can offer a thoughtful conversation.

The difference often comes down to personal preference.

Some people enjoy sitting across from a reader, seeing the cards and experiencing the atmosphere of a private appointment.

Others prefer the convenience and familiarity of speaking from home.

Here at Kerry Kulkens Magic Shop™ in Belgrave, Melbourne, I offer private readings by appointment, including face-to-face and telephone consultations.

My clients aren't limited to Victoria. People throughout Australia and overseas can enquire about remote readings.

Whether you live in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart or regional Australia, distance needn't prevent you from exploring a private consultation.

How Do You Choose a Genuine Tarot Reader in Australia?

This is one of the most important questions anyone can ask.

Tarot and psychic services are deeply personal, especially when someone feels vulnerable or uncertain.

Never choose a reader based purely on extravagant promises or frightening claims.

A responsible Tarot reader should treat you with respect, explain their approach, protect your privacy, and recognise that you make the final decisions about your life.

Be cautious of anyone who insists that you are cursed, claims your family faces imminent disaster or demands additional payments to prevent something terrible from happening.

Never let fear pressure you into expensive spiritual services.

Likewise, Tarot should not replace qualified medical, legal or financial advice.

A reading should encourage clarity and confidence, not create fear or dependency.

Having grown up within a family whose spiritual traditions span seven generations, I understand the importance of protecting the trust people place in a reader.

That responsibility matters enormously to me.

Tarot Reading in Melbourne: The Kerry Kulkens Family Legacy

My mother, Kerry Kulkens™, became known to many Australians through her psychic work, television appearances, radio and newspaper contributions.

She established Kerry Kulkens Magic Shop™ in 1969, creating a family business that has remained connected with psychic and metaphysical traditions for more than five decades.

I grew up surrounded by that world.

Tarot cards, palmistry, astrology, spiritual teachings, and conversations about life's mysteries were familiar parts of my upbringing.

As her daughter, I have carried on this heritage while adapting my work to the needs of modern clients.

Today, people face different pressures from those experienced in the 1970s.

Relationships are often complicated by technology and social media. Careers can change unexpectedly. Financial pressures affect households, and many people feel overwhelmed by modern life's speed.

Yet the questions people bring to a reading remain remarkably familiar.

Will I find happiness?

Am I making the right decision?

Is this relationship right for me?

Will things ever improve?

And perhaps the most important question of all:

Am I heading in the right direction?

These questions are part of being human.

My approach is to listen, explore the spiritual and symbolic traditions I have inherited, and help clients consider their situations from a fresh perspective.

What Happens During a Private Reading With Sarah Kulkens?

If you're considering your first private psychic or Tarot reading, there's no need to feel nervous.

You don't need special knowledge of the cards, and you certainly don't have to pretend that everything in your life is going perfectly.

My private consultations may include Tarot, palmistry, numerology and clairvoyant interpretation, depending on the reading.

Some people arrive with particular questions.

Others simply want to explore what is happening in their lives.

You are welcome to discuss the subjects that matter to you, whether they involve relationships, career decisions, personal confidence or an uncertain future.

I believe a reading should feel like a genuine, respectful conversation.

You should have the opportunity to ask questions, consider the information being discussed and leave feeling able to make your own choices.

There is no obligation to agree with every interpretation.

And there should never be any pressure to book additional services.

Can You Learn to Read Tarot Cards Yourself?

Yes, and I encourage people who are interested in Tarot to explore its symbolism.

You don't need to memorise all 78 cards immediately.

Start with a deck whose imagery appeals to you.

Take a little time each day to choose a card, look carefully at its illustrations and read about its traditional meaning.

Then ask yourself a simple question:

"What does this card encourage me to think about today?"

You may discover that certain cards help you consider issues you've been avoiding or opportunities you've overlooked.

Keeping a Tarot journal can also be useful.

Write down the card, your first impressions and any thoughts that arise. Over time, you'll become more familiar with the symbols and develop your own understanding.

At Kerry Kulkens Magic Shop™ in Belgrave, we also stock Tarot cards and other traditional divination tools for people interested in developing their knowledge.

Whether you're buying your first deck or adding to a collection, choosing cards you feel comfortable working with is a great place to start.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tarot Card Readings in Australia

How does Tarot work in simple terms?

Tarot uses illustrated cards and their traditional symbolic meanings to explore a question or personal situation. A reader interprets the cards and their positions within a spread. Spiritual practitioners may also incorporate intuition, while others use Tarot primarily for reflection and self-discovery.

Are Tarot card readings accurate?

Some people feel that their readings closely reflect their experiences, while others interpret the cards differently. No reliable scientific evidence shows that Tarot can consistently predict future events. A reading is best approached as an opportunity for spiritual exploration, reflection and personal insight rather than a guarantee of particular outcomes.

Can Tarot tell me if someone loves me?

Tarot can explore themes such as attraction, emotional connection, trust and compatibility. However, cards cannot reliably establish another person's private feelings. Honest communication and observing someone's behaviour remain essential in understanding a relationship.

Can Tarot predict marriage, pregnancy or financial success?

Tarot traditions include interpretations related to relationships, family, prosperity and opportunities, but cards cannot guarantee marriage, pregnancy, financial gains or other specific outcomes. Medical and financial decisions should always be supported by appropriate professional advice.

Is Tarot dangerous or associated with bad luck?

Tarot cards are illustrated objects and have no established power to cause harm or misfortune. Some people interpret them spiritually, while others use them as tools for reflection. You should never feel frightened or pressured because of a card's imagery or interpretation.

Your Future Is More Than a Set of Cards

After a lifetime surrounded by psychic traditions, one thing remains especially important to me.

People often seek Tarot readings when they want certainty.

They want to know whether love will return, whether an opportunity will succeed, or whether the difficult times they are experiencing will finally pass.

And I understand that feeling.

But I also believe your future deserves more than a promise that everything has already been decided.

It deserves your participation.

The beauty of Tarot lies in the opportunity to explore a situation, consider possibilities and recognise the power you still have to make meaningful choices.

Sometimes a little encouragement can help us see a situation differently.

Sometimes we need space to ask questions we've carried for a long time.

And sometimes we simply want someone to listen without judgement.

Whatever brings you to Tarot, I hope you approach it with curiosity, confidence and an open mind.

Remember, the cards may offer perspective on your journey, but you live your life and make your decisions.

To me, that's where the real magic begins.
