How to Connect With Ancestors for Guidance and Protection

By Sarah Kulkens, Psychic, Healer, and Daughter of Kerry Kulkens
Your ancestors are more than just names on a family tree or faded photos in an album. They are your spiritual allies, wise protectors who continue to walk beside you long after their earthly journey has come to an end.
When you learn to connect with your ancestors, you open the door to powerful guidance, healing, and protection. This connection is especially vital in times of uncertainty, transition, or spiritual growth.
In this post, I’ll show you exactly how to begin building a relationship with your ancestors in a simple, respectful, and meaningful way.
Step One: Create an Ancestor Space
Begin by creating a simple space to welcome them. This can be as elaborate or as humble as you like. A shelf, a small table, or even a quiet corner will do beautifully.
Place the following items:
A photo (if you have one)
A white candle
A small glass of water (water is a conduit for spirit)
This space becomes your energetic bridge, a place where love and remembrance meet.
Step Two: Invite Them In
When you’re ready, light the candle and speak clearly:
“I welcome my ancestors of love and light.
Guide me, protect me, walk beside me.”
This invocation serves as a spiritual key, unlocking a door to the ancestral realm. Speak it with heart. You’ll feel the shift.

Step Three: Offerings
Place something on the altar that your ancestors would have loved. It could be:
A favourite drink, like tea or coffee
Sweets or biscuits
Flowers or herbs from the garden
Offerings are not about ritual for ritual’s sake; they’re about honour. They say, “I see you. I remember you. Thank you.” This simple act strengthens the bond.
Step Four: Listen
Once you’ve made your offering, sit quietly.
Pay attention to:
Your thoughts
Your dreams
Sudden memories
Songs that pop into your mind
Shifts in energy or mood
These are often the subtle ways our ancestors reach through the veil. Keep a journal nearby. The more you listen, the louder their presence becomes.
Step Five: Thank Them
Before you leave your space, always take a moment to offer gratitude. Blow out the candle and say:
“Thank you for your guidance.”
Gratitude fosters a connection of respect, ensuring that the relationship remains reciprocal and strong.

This Is Partnership, Not Worship
Working with ancestors isn’t about worshipping them. It’s about forming a living relationship, a spiritual partnership based on love, honour, and legacy.
They don’t want you to suffer or struggle. They want to see you thrive. You are their continuation, their living dream. When you succeed, they rejoice.
A Personal Note: My Connection With Kerry
Since my mother, Kerry Kulkens, passed away, I’ve felt her guidance constantly. Whether I’m writing, teaching, or reading for a client, her spirit is often right there with me, gently steering me back to truth, to courage, to purpose.
Her love, her wisdom, her fire all still live on in me and my daughters. That connection is not only real, but also fragile.
And I want you to know: you have that same support.

Final Thoughts: Your Ancestors Are Waiting
Regardless of your background or beliefs, your ancestors are an integral part of who you are. Their stories flow through your blood. Their wisdom lives in your bones. Their protection is only a whisper away.
So start today. Create the space. Light the candle. Say the words.
Your ancestors are waiting. All you have to do is open the door.
With love and lineage,
